Changing Assessment due to Covid-19: Experiences and Impact

Description

This interactive session will explore the change in assessment in higher education due to the pandemic. Dr. Monica Ward will present a case study from the DCU School of Computing detailing how they managed the change and the types of assessment they adopted. The next speakers will present overviews of the change to online assessment from the students’ perspective. Dr. Linda Amrane-Cooper and Prof. Stylianos Hatzipanagos’ presentation draws from a project at the University of London evaluating the students’ experience of the transition to digital assessment. Then, Dr. Inés Gil-Jaurena will introduce a study undertaken at UNED about the impact of the change in online assessment on student’s performance and perceptions.

Orna Farrell

Orna Farrell is Assistant Professor specialising in online and blended education in Dublin City University (DCU). Orna holds a PhD in Education from Trinity College Dublin. Currently, Orna leads the Digital Learning Design Unit, created to support DCU’s pivot to hybrid learning due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Previously, she was Chair of the DCU Connected Online Humanities programmes for four years.
Working within DCU’s National Institute for Digital Learning. Orna’s research interests include online pedagogy, online student success and engagement, eportfolio and open educational practice. She has a growing publication record in her fields of interest, including a range of book chapters, journal articles, invited presentations and conference papers. She has published in high ranking journals such as Distance Education, the Journal of Interactive Media in Education, Research in Learning Technology, and the International Journal of Educational Technology in Higher Education.

Monica Ward

Monica is an Associate Professor and the Assistant Head for Teaching Excellence in the School of Computing at Dublin City University. She has extensive experience in teaching and assessing a range of subjects from technical to transversal skills modules. She is a pioneer of the use of technology in education and she advocates a co-creation and culturally-responsive approach with academics and students.


Stylianos Hatzipanagos

Stylianos is CDE (University of London Centre for Distance Education) Fellow and Executive Co-lead for Research and Dissemination. His expertise is in technology enhanced learning, research informed innovation of academic practice, and doctoral/postgraduate education management. His research and scholarship portfolio includes: learning design and evaluation of online learning environments, formative and technology-enhanced assessment, computer supported collaborative work, flexible and distance education, digital literacies, social media and social networks in an educational context.

Linda Amrane-Cooper
Linda is head of the University of London’s (UoL) Centre for Distance Education (CDE). She leads a team that support the development of expertise in the field of distance education, providing a focus for the development of high quality teaching and research in open and distance learning. Linda is also in the senior leadership team as Director of Strategic Projects leads the UoL PG Learning and Teaching in HE programme at UoL.

Inés Gil-Jaurena

Inés is an EDEN Fellow and member of the Steering Committee of the EDEN Network of Academic and Professionals (EDEN NAP). She is an Associate Professor at the Faculty of Education at the National Distance Education University (Universidad Nacional de Educación a Distancia-UNED), Spain. She coordinates the CO-Lab teaching innovation group at UNED. Her research in open and distance education includes topics such as assessment and curriculum design.
