Description:
This interactive session will explore practical and pedagogical ways to assess students online. The session will begin by exploring a range of alternative assessment approaches, Suzanne Stone and Rob Lowney will share their resource of crowd sourced case studies of technology enhanced assessments. Then, Lisa Donaldson, Dr. Tom Farrelly and Karen Buckley from Eportfolio Ireland will share practical and pedagogical examples of eportfolio for assessment. Finally, Dr. James Brunton will share his experiences of creating and enacting open pedagogy assignments in an online psychology degree.

Orna holds a Phd in Education from Trinity College. Working within DCU’s National Institute for Digital Learning Orna’s research interests include online pedagogy, online student success and engagement, and eportfolio based learning. She is principal investigator of the National Forum funded project #Openteach: professional development for open online educators. Orna is a founding member of Eportfolio Ireland, a professional learning network for eportfolio practitioners and researchers.
Vlad Mihaescu

Vlad Mihaescu has a PhD in educational and technological models of MOOCs and has more than 10 years’ experience as a trainer and teacher in areas like multimedia technologies, social media, e-tourism, e-learning, usability, entrepreneurship, programming, soft skills and leadership. Author of over 25 scientific papers and book chapters published in international conferences and journals, Vlad is involved in several European research projects in the field of eLearning. He is also a lecturer for UPT.

Suzanne Stone
Suzanne is a Learning Technologist in the Teaching Enhancement Unit, Dublin City University. Suzanne has been involved in research relating to educational technologies over the last number of years including projects on: a drop-in approach to professional development for Moodle; the development of a vocabulary assessment tool for pupils with special educational needs; student engagement in the online live classroom; the use of social media applications as back channels in higher education. Suzanne holds an MSc in Education & Training from DCU and a BSc in Communications & Media from Trinity College Dublin and is currently a digital learning EdD student.
Rob Lowney
Rob is a Learning Technologist in the Teaching Enhancement Unit, Dublin City University. He works with academic staff to enhance the teaching, learning and assessment practices on their modules with digital technologies. Rob has a particular interest in empowering academic staff to implement technology-enhanced assessment strategies. Other areas of interest include flipped learning, mobile devices in education, learning analytics and reusable learning objects.
Lisa Donaldson
Lisa is founder and currently a member of the steering group of Eportfolio Ireland: A Professional Learning Network for Eportfolio Practitioners and Researchers. Lisa is a Learning Technologist in the Teaching Enhancement Unit of Dublin City University. She is responsible for the roll out of the Learning Portfolio platform to over 10,000 faculty and students in DCU.
Tom Farrelly
Tom is a member of the Eportfolio Ireland Steering Committee and a Social Science Lecturer & Educational Developer at IT Tralee. His research interests are technology enhanced learning, open education and eportfolio. Tom is editor of the Irish Journal of Technology Enhanced Learning.
Karen Buckley
Karen Buckley is an assistant professor in the School of Inclusive and Special Education at the Institute of Education at Dublin City University. With particular research interest in inclusive pedagogy, Karen is an advocate for inclusive practice to improve and optimise teaching, learning and assessment in Higher Education. She is a doctoral candidate in Maynooth University where she is exploring professional development in Higher Education.
James Brunton
Dr. James Brunton, National Institute of Digital Learning in DCU. James is Assistant Professor and the Chair of the DCU Connected BA in Humanities (Psychology Major) Programme in the Open Education Unit, National Institute for Digital Learning. James is a member of the Digital Learning Research Network which includes over 50 staff with a research interest, and a range of scholarly outputs, in this area. His research interests include the psychology of identity formation, socialisation/orientation processes for ‘off-campus’ higher education students, online learning design, open pedagogy, and digital assessment.
